When he was younger, hygienist Abduljabbar Nasiru never saw dentistry in the cards for him: “It’s funny—when I was a kid,” he says, “the first time someone told me they wanted to be a dentist I’m pretty sure I laughed in their face! But here I am now, so, you know, never say never.”

As a former teacher, he always makes education a priority in his practice. “It’s so important,” he says. “People don’t know what they don’t know. And that’s kind of what really attracted me to dentistry, realizing how much there was I could teach people, how I could help people that way. I love connecting with my patients, I love when people come to me with questions. The best thing for me is when someone leaves feeling like they really learned something.”

Abduljabbar knows that it’s easy to get overwhelmed by everything there is to learn about oral health. “But that’s why I really take the time to explain things,” he says, “I’ll even teach you how to read your own x-rays if you want. Because at the end of the day, who’s going to care more about your teeth than you?”
