Dr. Sheryl Lee’s passion for dentistry began in, of all places, a restaurant. “Growing up,” she says, “I would often visit my dad at the restaurant where he worked. The owner had this remarkable way of forming these really special relationships with his customers—he catered to them, and they felt cared for, and really, that’s not so different from working in dentistry.”

It also helps that she learned good brushing habits from a young age. “My mom would literally chase me around with a toothbrush,” she says. “She’d have me brushing at friend’s houses, or in the car on my way to school. She really instilled that habit in me.”

Today, Dr. Lee makes a point of bringing a sense of hospitality to all her visits. “A lot of times patients might be apprehensive to come to the dentist,” she says, “because they feel like they’re going to be judged, or lectured—but dentistry is a dialogue, not a monologue. My goal is to show you that I’m on your side, and that begins with a conversation.”
