Born and raised in Queens, hygienist Erica Lliguichuzhca was inspired to study hygiene by her childhood dentist. “I’ve been going to see him since I was 5,” she says. “I didn’t even really know what a dental hygienist was, but he turned me onto the program and I’ve been doing it ever since.”

Erica also happens to be a swimming teacher, and that knack for education finds a home in her hygiene practice, too. “That was something my old dentist was great at,” she says. “And as a hygienist, I’m really here to help educate you, so you can learn how to take care of your oral health at home. I like teaching people, and I love it when people ask me questions.”

But she’s quick to admit that even hygienists aren’t perfect: “I make mistakes too,” she says. “I didn’t really grow up flossing, I didn’t know much about oral care until I went to hygiene school. But I hope that by connecting with you about my own struggles, you can feel more comfortable talking about yours.”
