Hygienist Glenny Baez was originally inspired to study dentistry by a dentist of hers in the Dominican Republic, where she was born and raised. “She treated me so well, and made me feel so comfortable,” she says. “And I knew I wanted to be a dentist like that, to help make people comfortable with dentistry the way she did for me.”

In fact, before getting her hygiene degree in the U.S., Glenny was a practicing dentist in the Dominican Republic. “The system is a bit different here,” she says, “it’s a different way of practicing. But I’m in pursuit of becoming a dentist here, too.”

Her hope is to build a relationship with each of her patients, and her approach boils down to three simple rules: “First, I listen,” she says. “I want to understand your concerns. Second is empathy—I’ll put myself in the patient’s position. And third, I’ll let them know that I’m there for them. You can forget about what’s happened in the past. The important thing is now we’re going to work together.”
