Born and raised in Brooklyn, hygienist Stephanie Dirani found dentistry through a family friend, who also happened to be her dentist. “He was joking about me changing my major all the time and said ‘just become a dental hygienist!’,” she says. “And I looked into it, just to see, and actually really ended up liking it.”

For Stephanie, her role as a hygienist is all about building a relationship with her patients: “You know, you wouldn’t normally just let some random stranger look into your mouth,” she says, “so having trust, that’s such an important way to connect with a patient. For me, the biggest thing is just communication, and honesty, and just being as open as possible.”

She believes that communication can help her patients in the long run, too. “It’s important for us to feel like we’re involved in our own health,” she says. “If I can help explain what exactly is going on, or help find personalized solutions that work for you and your life, I think that can have a big impact on helping to get you to good oral health.”
