Recovery after non-surgical gum therapy

Completing non-surgical gum therapy is a pivotal step towards improving your periodontal health and protecting your teeth and gums from further infection. After treatment, it's common to experience mild tenderness, sensitivity, or slight swelling for a few days as the gums begin to heal. Some patients may experience minor bleeding, especially when brushing or flossing near the treated areas.

Support the healing process by continuing to brush gently with a soft-bristled toothbrush and rinse with an alcohol-free mouthwash if recommended by your dental team. Over-the-counter pain relief may help manage temporary discomfort. Avoid smoking or vaping tobacco or cannabis products for at least 48 hours, as these can interfere with the healing process and irritate the gums.

Your gums may feel more sensitive to hot or cold foods immediately after treatment, so softer foods and plenty of water can help during recovery.

Maintaining good oral hygiene and attending follow-up periodontal maintenance visits are important for supporting long-term gum health and preventing future buildup below the gumline. If discomfort, swelling, or bleeding continues beyond a few days, contact our office for further guidance.
