Dental IV sedation plays an important role in keeping you comfortable during dental surgery. Administered by experienced professionals who closely monitor you throughout your treatment. If you’re looking for dental IV sedation near you, our team provides safe, comfort-first care from start to finish.
Dental IV sedation, sometimes called IV conscious sedation, involves delivering medication through a small IV to help you stay deeply relaxed during oral surgery.
IV sedation for dental surgery is typically recommended for more complex procedures, such as surgical tooth extractions, dental implants or surgery for impacted teeth. It creates a calm, controlled state so you can remain comfortable while we complete your treatment.
Unlike with general anaesthesia, with IV sedation you continue breathing on your own and can respond to gentle prompts if needed. Most patients remember very little about the procedure afterward.
IV sedation is available at our Flatiron specialty dental studio for complex oral surgery procedures. Before moving forward, we complete a thorough evaluation and walk you through what to expect. Throughout your surgery, our team closely monitors you to ensure your safety and comfort at every step.
For patients who don’t need surgical sedation but would still like help feeling more relaxed during dental care, we also offer nitrous oxide as a lighter sedation option.
Understanding how IV sedation will fit into your oral surgery procedure can help you feel prepared. Here's what you can expect:
Surgical consultation
We begin with a comprehensive consult. This includes imaging, a review of your medical history, and a discussion about your procedure, whether that is IV sedation for dental implants or another surgical need.
Sedation evaluation
Not every patient requires IV sedation for dental surgery. We determine if it is the right option for you based on your overall health, the complexity of your surgery, and established clinical guidelines.
Pre-procedure instructions
You will receive clear instructions about eating, drinking, medications, and arranging a ride home before your procedure. Following these guidelines carefully is essential for your safety and helps ensure your IV sedation and recovery go smoothly.
IV placement and monitoring
On the day of surgery, a small IV line is placed in your arm or hand. Medication is administered gradually. Throughout the procedure, we monitor your heart rate, oxygen levels, and blood pressure.
Surgery
Once you are fully relaxed and comfortable, we begin the procedure. Our focus is on delivering precise, efficient surgical care while maintaining a calm, carefully monitored environment.
Recovery and aftercare
After surgery, you will rest in our studio until you are stable and ready to go home with your escort. We provide detailed aftercare instructions and remain available for follow-up questions.
Relax with nitrous oxide sedation
Nitrous oxide, commonly called laughing gas, is a mild form of sedation that helps you feel calm and relaxed during routine dental work. It is available at all of our Tend studios.
It’s administered through a small, comfortable mask that rests gently over your nose. If you’re feeling nervous or unsure about your procedure, nitrous oxide can help you feel more at ease and comfortable throughout your visit.
As you breathe normally, the gas creates a light, calming effect while you remain awake and aware. Once the mask is removed, the effects fade quickly, so you can head home and get back to your day.
Nitrous oxide may be recommended for longer or more involved procedures, or anytime you’d like extra support to feel comfortable in the chair. If you feel anxious about visiting the dentist, talk to your Tend team about whether nitrous oxide is right for you.
We want to make accessing dental care easy. Our Tend Dental studios work with most major dental insurance carriers, and our team is here to help you navigate your benefits.

Dental sedation, including IV sedation and nitrous oxide, is an important part of many oral surgery procedures. Here’s what you should know about safety, recovery, and what to expect.
Dental IV sedation is medication given through a small IV in your arm or hand to help you feel deeply relaxed during oral or dental surgery. You may also hear it called IV dental sedation or IV conscious sedation dental care.
IV sedation for dental work is usually used for more complex procedures, such as surgical extractions or IV sedation for dental implants. You are not fully asleep like you would be with general anesthesia. You can still breathe on your own and respond if needed, but most patients remember very little of the procedure.
Yes, for most healthy patients, dental IV sedation is considered safe when provided by trained professionals.
Before recommending IV sedation for dental surgery, we review your full medical history and current medications. During the procedure, we continuously monitor your heart rate, oxygen levels, and blood pressure.
Patients often ask what is in IV sedation for dental treatment. IV sedation typically involves a combination of medications that help you relax, ease discomfort, and reduce awareness of the procedure.
The specific dental IV sedation drugs used can vary depending on the type and length of your surgery, as well as your medical history and overall health. Your provider selects and adjusts the medications carefully to match your needs. Everything is precisely measured and continuously monitored to keep you comfortable, stable, and safe throughout treatment.
Most patients remember little to nothing about their IV sedation dental work because the medications used often create a temporary amnesia effect.
During IV sedation for dental surgery, you remain in a deeply relaxed state and can respond to simple prompts if needed. However, the sedatives commonly reduce your ability to form new memories during the procedure.
That means you may have little or no recollection of the surgery afterward. This is one reason IV sedation is frequently used for more involved procedures, as it helps make the experience feel easier and less overwhelming.
Dental IV sedation side effects are usually mild and short-term. You may experience:
Sleepiness
Grogginess
Mild nausea
Dry mouth
These effects typically wear off within a few hours. Because IV sedation dental treatment affects alertness, you will need someone to drive you home and stay with you after surgery.
We provide detailed recovery instructions so you know exactly what to expect.
Many people ask us, "How much is IV sedation for dental work?" The answer to this depends on several factors. During your consult we will provide a personalized estimate based on your treatment plan.
The cost of dental IV sedation generally depends on how long your procedure lasts and the level of monitoring required. The dental IV sedation cost is usually separate from the surgical procedure itself.
Coverage can vary by plan. Some dental insurance policies may help cover a portion of the cost if IV sedation for dental surgery is considered medically necessary.
Our team can help you understand how your benefits may apply and discuss estimated costs related to your treatment. Coverage and reimbursement are determined by your insurance provider and may vary based on your specific plan. We also offer financing options for oral surgery procedures that involve IV sedation dental care.
IV sedation is typically recommended for patients having:
Oral surgery
Dental implant surgery
Multiple surgical extractions
Complex dental procedures
Your medical history and overall health determine whether IV sedation dental treatment is right for you. We make that decision together during your consultation.
Nitrous oxide, often called laughing gas, is a mild sedative used during dental procedures to help you feel calm and relaxed. Unlike dental IV sedation, it is inhaled through a small mask placed over your nose.
Sedation using nitrous oxide is available at all Tend studios and is commonly used for general dental procedures rather than oral surgery.
Nitrous oxide is delivered through a comfortable nasal mask. You breathe normally through your nose, and the calming effects begin within minutes.
The level of sedation can be adjusted throughout your visit, so you stay comfortable but fully awake. This makes it very different from IV sedation for dental surgery, which creates a much deeper level of relaxation.
Nitrous oxide: Mild to moderate relaxation, fully awake, quick recovery
Dental IV sedation: Deep relaxation, limited memory of the procedure, used for oral surgery and dental implants
If you are having a complex procedure like IV sedation for dental implants, IV sedation is typically recommended. For routine dental care or mild anxiety, nitrous oxide may be enough to help you feel at ease.
Yes, in most cases you can drive yourself home after nitrous oxide, once your Tend dentist confirms you’re ready.
One of the main benefits of nitrous oxide is that it wears off quickly after the mask is removed. Most patients feel back to normal within minutes and can safely return to their usual activities the same day.
Why people love Tend
Amazing experience. Staff was all lovely and skilled, while also offering referrals for unique situations but flexibly willing to work with the patient’s situation/wishes. Most comfortable cleaning I’ve ever gotten, to the point it felt more soothing than anything. Being able to balance a human touch with deep competence in a clinic like this was really surprising, even having had very positive experiences at other locations.

This is not your traditional dental office. From the moment I walked in, I was greeted with a smile, and the service throughout was consistent. They give you the option to brush your teeth before your appointment starts, pick your toothpaste flavor, and choose a show to watch during your cleaning. They explain everything before they do it, which I think could be helpful for people who are afraid of the dentist. The hygienist was especially kind and explained things with visuals, which I appreciated! I also noticed their materials are quite high-tech. Overall, it was a good experience, and I would recommend Tend!

They also walked me through my care plan and were upfront about what my insurance covered. I can’t wait to continue with Tend for my upcoming appointments.

I was so impressed with the staff and dentist on Saturday. The atmosphere was reassuring and comfortable from the first greeting through my entire appointment. The attention to detail was impressive and made me feel like I was treated like a queen for the day. I decided to recommend the clinic to my daughter, and she will be going on Monday. This is definitely a top-notch dental clinic. I give them a 10 out of 10.

The front desk staff are awesome, super friendly, and helpful. The technicians are equally a joy to interact with. Dr. Ho is gentle and an active listener, which is very comforting. Overall, a great experience. I’ve been going to Tend for six years and two years at this office.
